Snow Queen is one of the most underrated Korean TV dramas of all time. The leading actor and actress of the series did win awards for their excellent performances. However, the series did not fare as well in other countries in Asia. In fact, I happened to order a DVD copy of this drama by chance as I was surfing through the internet.
The best thing about this TV series is the depth of its story. For example, it explores the realm of father and son relationships very closely. It tackles how intense pressure coming from the father can cause even the brightest and most successful son to commit suicide in the face of failure. In this case, it was his getting second place in a Mathematics competition.
In turn, the relationship between two best friends is also explored. As one friend is devastated by his failing the competition and his father in the process, the other one argues with him. He tells him that he should stand up for himself and not always follow his father's whims. After the suicide, the friend who starts the argument feels it is his fault.
So he gives up on his dreams and decides to be a second-rate boxer instead. As you can see, these two scenarios aren't really groundbreaking in terms of depth. They are actually quite cliché as you can find these in other Korean dramas. However, the way these themes were acted out in the series breathes new life into them.
And then love comes into the picture. Can a man so scarred by his past learn to love again? And how can he love a woman he knows is going to die soon? Is he emotionally strong enough to handle the loss of another loved one? Watching this television series from start to end is truly an enriching experience.
