Korean Movies By John Clifton

Here's a list of 10 Korean movies of the past several years that I enjoyed. These range from the comic to the tragic, and involve both action movies and historical dramas. Three of them are taken from events in Korea over the past 40 years or so.
My Sassy Girl - Based on a real life story that a man posted on the Internet, My Sassy Girl became all the rage in East Asia back in 2001, when it was popular in Japan, China, Hong Kong, Singapore and Taiwan. This led to a forgettable direct-to-disc American remake in 2008, starring Elisha Cuthbert (who's unforgettable). My Sassy Girl is about a college guy who meets a drunk girl - known only as the "Girl" - on the subway, and all the odd adventures they get into while falling in love. You'll never believe where the plot goes in this one.

Coffee Prince By Synthe Teo

Coffee Prince is a light hearted Korean drama which is really popular in Asia after its airing. So what exactly made Coffee Prince a big hit in Asia? The cast, the characters, the really sweet lovey dovey moments between Han Kyul and Eun Chan and also the backgroud music which really suits the various scenes and bring out the mood of the scene contributed to the success of the drama. In most dramas, we often see the conflicts between a couple but the sweet moments of a couple during their dating periods is often not covered. However in Coffee Prince, we get to see the dating process of Han Kyul and Eun Chan and how their relationship grew and developed over time. It reflects the tiny but significant problems and situations which may be faced by many couples in real life and this made it easy for the audience to be connected to the show.

Boys Over Flowers - Third Time's the Charm? By Erika Ayala

If there is one Asian television drama that has stood the test of time in terms of popularity and relevance, it's Boys Over Flowers. Of course, a fan of the series would know that the Korean version of the Japanese manga or comic is already the second remake of original Taiwanese television of the drama entitled Meteor Garden.
The first remake was made by Japan. And it has the same title as the original manga version-Hana Yori Dango. What's interesting about all three versions of this television series is how the culture of each country that remakes the drama infuses their own culture into it. So even though the central narrative is still unchanged, a unique flavor sweetens each version of the series nonetheless.

Addicted to Plastic Surgery - The Facts By S Matthews

Wannabe actress and model Jenny Lee had suffered more than 37 operations before she even reached her 30 birthday, most of them excruciatingly painful and requiring a long recovery period. While the initial temptation might be to feel sorry for the poor girl, that altruisism begins to wane a bit once the blonde, long-legged Texas native reveals that none of the ops were actually necessary. In fact, they were all cosmetic. Korean-born Hang Mioku, 48, reportedly injected cooking oil into her own face in a bid to make herself more beautiful.

200 Pounds Beauty By Synthe Teo

200 Pounds Beauty is a lighted hearted Korean comedy which actually conveys a message to the audiences.
Its about a really fat girl called Hanna (played by Kim Ah Joong) who is really good at singing, but obviously she's not attractive, therefore she could only be a 'ghost singer' for Ammy. Hanna would be the one who sings backstage while Ammy would be the person lip syncing and performing on stage. Hanna is secretly in love with Sang-jun (played by Joo Jin Mo), the manager for Ammy, but dared not confess to him. Then one day, Ammy humiliated Hanna by making a joke out of her and after Hanna overheard some hurting words about her during the conversation between Sang-jun and Ammy, she decided to do a full body makeover/plastic surgery.

Korean TV Dramas and All Things Korean Invading the Philippines By Erika Ayala

It was bound to happen. The increasing popularity of Korean TV dramas in the Philippines coupled with the mass migration of Koreans to the country was bound to affect the entertainment industry in more ways than one. Recently, the local airwaves have been dominated by Korean pop (Kpop) music especially by those of the Wonder Girls and 2NE1.
And part of the Kpop group 2NE1 is Sandara Park, who used to be one of the most famous celebrities in the Philippines. Currently, Boys Over Flowers is arguably the favorite television show by Filipinos right now. The ladies have fallen in love with the members of the Korean F4, especially Lee Min-ho and Kim Bum.

Lee Hyori - One of Korean Music's Top K-pop Artists By Katherine Joyce

Several of South Korea's artists and musical groups have branched out today and are now gaining more and more popularity in several countries around the world. The popularity of South Korean music has also been known as part of the Korean Wave which represents the increasing rate of popularity of the contemporary culture of South Korea among the countries in Asia as well as the world.
One of the more popular artists in South Korea is a girl named Lee Hyori . She is well known by South Koreans to be one of the members of a popular Korean girl group called FINKL which stands for Fine Killing Liberty. In Korea "Fin" means "the end" therefore it reads like "the end of liberty killing". The girl group decided to choose that name since it has a deeper meaning to them. For them it is like they are standing up against anything or put and end to anything that is killing their liberty or freedom. Some may not like their title but it certainly worked for the girls and they made a lot of popular musical hits with it.
Lee was the girl bands leader being the oldest member of the teenage group. It is interesting to know that she was the last member to join the group and was discovered while she was taking pictures with her friends. The girl band was launched around the month of January of the year 1998 and made their official debut in the month of May of the same year. Their first single was called the "Blue Rain" and they gained a lot of supporters right away considering that they are still new in the industry. After their second album was released, there was no stopping them in hitting the media spotlight.
After the FINKL's split, Lee continued to pursue her career and has become one of the most popular artists in South Korea. She was able to develop most of her talents and became the face of Korea in both the South Pacific and quite recently in the whole world. Unlike other entertainment stars, she has won a lot of advertising contracts among Korea's top companies. She has remained a popular choice among the companies who wanted to cash in on her popular public image.
Daesangs which is the most prestigious of Korean Music awards has been swept by Hyori in the year 2003 and winning more than 7 artists of the year awards. Many of her K-pop albums have sold hundreds of thousands of copies in South Korea. These days, she continues to become an even more popular artist around the globe with her unique style of singing coupled with her dancing talent. With her on the side of Korean Music , there is no doubt that their kind of music will become more and more popular around the world in the days to come.
